Services for developing a methodology and conducting a survey of young people in Central Asia

To respond to growing concerns about the rise of violent extremism among youth in Central Asia, UNDP Kazakhstan has launched a 3-years project on “Strengthening community resilience and regional cooperation for the prevention of violent extremism (PVE) in Central Asia”, funded by the Government of Japan. The Project’s overall strategy is to improve the social and economic inclusion of youth in Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Tajik and Turkmen communities that are considered most at risk of radicalisation. The purpose of PPMI's study was to support UNDP by providing evidence and understanding of the current attitudes, perceptions and behaviour of UNDP’s project beneficiaries in relation to violent extremism and socio-economic inclusion.

To obtain this information, PPMI, supported by PVE expert Anna Matveeva implemented a survey among the project beneficiaries. This included the following steps:

  • Preparation of the conceptual framework, research plan and survey questionnaire;
  • Execution of the survey in the four countries, supported by local researchers and UNDP Country Offices
  • Analysis of the survey data, preparation of the study report and presentation of findings and recommendations to UNDP
